Tuesday Is Primary Day In New York

New York voters, please take note: Primary elections will be held Tuesday, June 25, 2024. In the primaries, New York’s political parties will select candidates to run for office in the general election in November. Voters will choose candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives, the New York State Senate, the New York State Assembly, and various local offices.

To be eligible to vote on June 25, you must be a registered voter and an enrolled member of a political party that is holding a primary election in your area. At times, primary elections are battles between different factions within a political party, and the outcomes of those elections can play a major role in a party’s direction and priorities. In 2018, little-known progressive Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez trounced Rep. Joe Crowley in a Democratic primary in New York’s 14th congressional district. Rep. Crowley, an establishment Democrat, had served in Congress for 10 terms and had been mentioned as a potential future speaker of the House. The results of that primary “shocked the country,” elevating the influence of the Democratic Party’s left wing nationwide and making Rep. Ocasio-Cortez a progressive celebrity.

One of this year’s Democratic congressional primaries could have a significant impact upon the Party’s foreign policy. In New York’s 16th congressional district, Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-Yonkers) is being challenged by Westchester County Executive George Latimer (D-Rye) in a Democratic primary. This hotly-contested primary has been described as the “‘the most expensive House primary ever,’” as more than $23 million has been spent on campaign advertising. The campaign is a struggle between the pro-Palestinian progressive wing of the Democratic Party (represented by Rep. Bowman) and the pro-Israel establishment wing of the party (represented by Latimer).
