NYU Langone Ends Gender-Transition Procedures for Minors

The Trump Administration’s Department of Justice announced that NYU Langone Health has reached an agreement to end the provision of gender-transition procedures to minors, including puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgical interventions.

NYU also agreed to pay $8.5 million as part of the resolution of a federal investigation. The Justice Department notes that the claims were allegations, that no liability was determined, and that NYU denied the allegations.

For New York Families Foundation, the development is welcome news.

“Children experiencing confusion or distress about their sex deserve compassion, counseling, and appropriate medical care—but they should not be subjected to drugs or procedures intended to alter healthy bodies in a futile attempt to change their sex,” said Jason J. McGuire, Executive Director of New York Families Foundation.

“Puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and irreversible surgical procedures have no place in treating minors. Children cannot fully grasp the lifelong consequences of these decisions, and adults have a responsibility to protect them rather than medicalize their distress.”

“We are grateful that NYU Langone will no longer provide these interventions to children. This should be the standard throughout New York. Minors deserve time to grow and mature, and to receive care that respects the reality of their biological sex rather than permanently altering their developing bodies.”

The NYU agreement mirrors similar agreements with other major hospital systems, including one with New York’s Mount Sinai Health System. The Justice Department says its nationwide investigation into pediatric gender-transition services remains ongoing.
